After three successful years, Bristol's favourite bass-heavy day festival, Sequences returns on 17 August to take over the city’s legendary Motion nightclub, with their biggest and most varied lineup yet.
Headlining this year’s festival is one of the earliest advocates of UK garage music, DJ EZ. As well as his energetic style of DJing, EZ is known for hosting the long-running Kiss show and mixing the Pure Garage series of compilations. After years of performing marathon sets, in 2016 he announced he would live-stream a 24-hour non-stop set and raised over £60,000 for Cancer Research UK.
Representing the UK rap scene, Headie One will also perform on the main stage. The rising star has made himself known with his tune ‘18HUNNA’ peaking on the UK Singles Chart at number 6. Earlier this year, Relentless Records A&R Rob Ukaegbu told Music Week that Headie One is on track to be up there with the likes of Stormzy and Skepta.
Since first picking up the mic in 2009, Jaykae has been instrumental in putting Birmingham’s grime scene on the map and will also be representing the genre at this year’s Sequences festival. The artist has recently supported Skepta’s Birmingham date on the Konnichiwa tour and has been featured in the remix of his hit single ‘That’s Not Me’.
The biggest triple threat in drum and bass - Voltage, Serum and Bladerunner alongside MC Inja, are joining forces with the legendary Shadow Demon Coalition MC’s Bassman and Trigga to form Kings of the Shadows. KOTR have taken the UK rave scene by storm, bringing their signature rolling sounds to the masses and are one of the most sought-after acts on the scene.
The mighty DJ Hazard will be making a return to Motion this summer. Since his last game-changing EP Bricks Don’t Roll in 2014, the drum and bass heavyweight has been busy in the studio making new music, which has only been heard during his live sets. A DJ known to venture through all styles of drum and bass, Hazard keeps the tempo fast and the double-drops constant. To get a taste of what’s to come, check out his set from this year’s Rampage, where he went back-to-back with his Playaz Recordings label boss DJ Hype.
Bristol-based duo Koan Sound will give a live performance of their Polychrome album. Their distinctive glitchy and funky bass beats have previously captured the attention of acclaimed artists, such as Skrillex. Their Polychrome album reflects how their sound has progressed over time, taking inspiration from jazz, metal, neurofunk and drum and bass.
A household name in grime, P Money will be bringing his raw, fast-paced lyrical flow to this year’s Sequences. P Money's career in grime has taken him from his home town New-Cross and battling in Lord of the Mics 6, to bookings all over the UK varying in grime, drum and bass and bassline. This year, he released his latest Mixtape, Money Over Everyone 3 and has just collaborated with the up-and-coming drum and bass producer Kanine on the tune Point Em Up.
Led by the visionary label boss Kasra, Critical Sound is the club night brand of the esteemed label Critical Music, known for pushing the darker, complex styles of drum and bass. As expected of Critical Sound, a diverse entourage of artists are joining the takeover which includes Mefjus, Halogenix and label newcomer Levela.
The 140bpm soldiers Mala, Kahn and Sicaria Sound will be representing Deep Medi in a dubstep takeover. Deep Medi are leaders in the dubstep genre, remaining true to the genre’s form and its roots since launching 2006, focusing on dark lo-fi drums and sub-heavy bass lines infused with sounds of reggae and dub. Jamaican sound system Mungo’s Hifi are performing with Eva Lazarus, a genre-busting vocalist who’s collaborated with producers from all corners of the dance music scene, including the Stanton Warriors and Etherwood.
Kyrist is one of the leading female artists in the drum and bass. She's been taking the scene by storm with Dispatch, Hospital and Critical supporting her dark neuro-influenced sound. Another female artist, Jossy Mitsu, will also be making her sequences debut. Having built her name up in Birmingham, Jossy Mitsu is a versatile DJ who’s selection ranges from House and Techno, to Jungle and two-step. Now with a Rinse FM residency and the backing of Red Bull, Fabric and Astral Black, she is set to shell down Motion at this year's festival.
Sequences 2019 is the most diverse yet, with artists from all corners of bass music on the bill. The main stage lineup will be an interesting experience as it's rare to see such artists performing under the same roof. With the top talent from garage, drum and bass, dubstep and grime, as well as some strong female artists covering each style, Sequences is set to be a roadblock.
