Seminal drum and bass imprint Metalheadz are celebrating the legacy of their iconic Blue Note sessions at London’s Village Underground on 14 July. The Blue Note was a London night club where Metalheadz would host Sunday events throughout the early 90s. These regular nights highlighted a point where the sound of drum and bass began to materialise from the early jungle and hardcore scene.
The Blue Note session focused on the growth of the raw and darker sounds of drum and bass.“You got to hear tracks from DJ’s that had just been made... Possibly drum and bass’ most exciting moment”- Marcus Intalex, 2003.
DJs and producers would attend the weekly events to network and hear their music on the intimate venue’s powerful Eskimo Noise sound system. Resident DJs including Doc Scott, Dillinja, Photek and Loxy would spin the latest tracks from artists who define this new sound.“It was the start of really dark drum and bass”- Fabio, 2006.
The upcoming reunion will see original artists, Grooverider and DJ Storm make a return, alongside the new rugged alias for house and techno, Special Request and an unannounced headliner. We'll also see sets from Dispatch Recordings' label bossAnt TC1, a live performance from Metalheadz’ own Paradox and the influential drum and bass cross techno producer,DJ Lee.Hosting the night is original Blue Note sessions MC and vocalist Cleveland Watkiss, alongside MC’s Blackeye and Codebreaker.
As well as the music, the extra appeal of Blue Note was the venue itself. The chosen venue for July’s session is East London’s Village Underground, a creative, cultural hub housed in revamped tube carriages, shipping containers and a 1000 capacity warehouse, powered by a DB Audio sound system.
The original Metalheadz Blue Note sessions marked a significant turning point in drum and bass history. The era left a newly inspired generation of artists to craft a new sound,
influenced by jungle's experimental breaks and sub-heavy bass lines. The upcoming event will celebrate the legacy of the monumental movement, that is still appreciated amongst the rave scene today.
