Preview: Critical Sound London Studio 338

Updated: Aug 3, 2020

Critical was founded by Kasra back in 2002 and is home to some of the world’s leading artists across the drum and bass spectrum. The diverse styles range from dark liquid by the likes of Hyroglifics and Foreign Concept, to heavy neurofunk from Mefjus and Emperor.

Critical is one of the most respected and unique independent labels with a global following. After a succession of sold-out shows at Studio 338 last year, the label makes their return for 2020 on 15 February, with a massive night that showcases

both the eclectic and tried-and-true sides of their sound across the venue’s two rooms.

Since 2010, Mefjus has become a leading influence within the genre. His signature sound has been felt across the furthest expanses of drum and bass - from his halftime twist of ‘Sunday Crunk’ to his emotional cameo on Camo & Krooked’s album ‘Mosaik’. Mefjus’ neurofunk vibrations are guaranteed to rock 338’s main room. Visionary label boss Kasra, has an imaginative and innovative approach to bass-heavy music. His third release, the ‘Mécanique EP’ brings a dark, chilling sound across four tracks and includes Enei’s enormous remix of Kasra’s ‘Ski Mask’. He’s guaranteed to bring a heavy and energetic set on the night.

Hailing from the early 2000’s dubstep scene, Critical front man Enei mixes old-school neuro funk and tech step with fresh and futuristic minimal drum and bass. His most recent release ‘Sinking’ showcases his first foray into the popular foghorn sound. Also on the night's agenda is T>I, a DJ and producer who showcases an original low-fi, mechanical sound that's been supported from all the major drum and bass labels including Serial Killaz, Playaz, and Co-lab Recordings. It's also been revealed that he will be performing an exclusive showcase of his forthcoming album 'Blank Canvas' during his set at 338.

The latest addition to the Critical family is south LondonerParticle. The young artist broke through the ranks with his first release for Critical’s Binary series, alongside his stand-out remixes of 'Original Nuttah' and 'Under My Sensi'. Particle’s production skills have seen

plenty of support from the majors Andy C, Randall and boss-man Kasra. Particle has already proven he’s not going anywhere and there’s a lot to come from this artist. Also joining the main room line-up as a special guest is old school favourite and original

junglist, Dillinja. His explosive sets often showcase a range of triple dropped classics and new jump up rollers that are guaranteed to amp up the night.

The room two line-up is not to be overlooked, with sets from some of the most exciting double acts drum and bass has to offer. Ravers will be treated to sets from Circuits - Kasra and Inside Info's latest collaboration, plus a two-hour performance from new-wave artists, Sam Binga and Chimpo, who's versatile sets often touch on grime, drum and bass, dubstep, garage, dancehall and hip hop to create a unique sound that destroys dancefloors. Room two will also see dark liquid vibes from Critical's own, Hyroglifics and an exclusive DJ set from multi-genre vocalist, Charli BrixAnnix, the combined force of Konichi and Decimal Bass, will also be gracing the decks as the second special guest. The line-up speaks for itself. This is a big night in the Critical calendar and is guaranteed to be a packed out from open 'til close. Tickets are now on third release and it's looking likely to be an overall sell-out.
