The drum and bass scene had one of its busiest years in 2019. That year saw the breakthrough of many new and unique artists, backed confidently by forward-thinking veteran DJs and their respective labels. The competition for Drum & Bass Arena’s best newcomer label award was strong and widely debated amongst social media forums. While the internationally-recognised nominees were strong, a South London based label Pick 'N' Mix steadily grew its own fanbase outside the mainstream spotlight with solid releases and merchandise throughout the year. Since our interview with the Pick 'N' Mix over a year ago, the label dropped 7 digital chart-topping releases from the likes of Vital, Blckhry, Bare Up, a 10-track LP from Hexa and more. The label is catered mainly towards the up-and-comers and managed entirely by the DJ and Croydon FM Broadcaster, TJ.
The Pick 'N' Mix back catalogue could be described as a ‘stupendous confectionery’. The cover art for every release is designed with vibrance and colour representing the fun and flavoursome side of drum and bass music. While the artwork drew interest, it was the music that caught the attention. Vital’s They Will See EP rolled through with an infectious jump-up sound while Division’s Zulu Tribe had a darker and edgier vibe. High-profile artists from Logan D all the way to Skeptical have supported the tracks in their sets which goes to show this South London Label has real taste.
Pick 'N' Mix is kicking off 2020 with a brand-new free download series entitled ‘Sweet Selections’ dedicated to releasing a free track on the first Friday of each month from an up-and-coming artist. The first edition is from the Latvia-based DJ and producer Alex SLK. This track is a VIP (version in production) of Fussy, released in the previous year. This iteration switches the arpeggiated bassline of the original for a single note and a tweaked mix, an ideal track for DJs who like to mix fast and get creative with double drops.
The first edition of Sweet Selections is out on February 7 and will be available from the Pick N Mix Soundcloud. Keep up with all the latest music from Pick N Mix here. Alex SLK / Pick 'N' Mix
